Hello Webelos Two Scouts,

My name is Mr. Stine and I'm the Scoutmaster of Haddon Township's Boy Scout Troop 179.  We met at the Pack/Troop Holiday Bonfire at Edison School in December  I wanted to invite you to a pretty cool event called the Klondike Derby.  The Derby is on Saturday, January 30th at Pine Hill Scout Reservation, about a 25 minute drive from here.

The Klondike Derby is a race where the Boy Scouts pull a sled on trails through the woods from one campsite to the next.  At each campsite, they are challenged to do different outdoor skills and leadership challenges.  They might need to make a campfire using just two matches, or tie a couple of different knots, or show how to do an emergency rescue or some first aid.  They get scored on how well they do.  But the judges don't just score them on how well they tie knots.  They are also looking at how well the Patrol communicates with each other, does the Patrol leader get all the scouts involved, do the have a good attitude even when things aren't going right.  The Troop has a lot of fun and last year, one of our Patrols came in first overall.  We have three separate sleds with 6-7 scouts on each one.

This year, several of the scouts will be camping out to on Saturday night after the race.  Yes, it will be cold, but the Boy Scouts have been preparing how to go cold weather camping so we'll be prepared.  Some scouts do only go down for the day heading back home around 5:30 PM Saturday night.  If you spend the night though, they show a movie in the mess hall for a couple hours.  We'll have a big hot meal at our campsite Sat night, go see the moview, come back to the site and have a campfire and then get into the tents.  We wake up Sunday morning, get the campfire going again and have a big hot breakfast before heading home around 9:00AM.

I wanted to invite all the Webeloes Twos to join us on Saturday.  You can participate on the Klondike race along with the Boy Scouts.  You can stay for the day or, with a parent, you can spend the night.  The Troop has tents and all the cooking gear we'll need.  You need a good sleeping bag, ground cloth, dry clothes and a healthy attitude for an adventure.

You all probably know Ryan.  Ryan is a Boy Scout and your Den Chief.  Ryan and I and a couple of Boy Scouts will be attending your January 26th meeting to tell you more about the trip and answer your questions.  I wanted to send you this email so you have time to think about whether you want to come along on the Klondike or not.  And if you don't want to or have some other event on that day, no sweat.  The Troop goes camping once a month and, as Webeloes Twos, you can start joining us on our trips.  We really hope that you join the Troop after your final Blue and Gold Banquet in April.

Thank You!
